Novice Youth Barrel Racing

Story by Tonya Ratliff-Garrison | Photo by Jessica Hein | Paint Horse Racing | July 1, 2011

Gay Dry was a broodmare and had seven foals before she was pulled out of the pasture and taught to barrel race.

Samantha Collier and Gay Dry win their first world championship in Novice Youth Barrel Racing.

Until three years ago, Gay Dry had never seen a barrel. Now the 15-year-old bay tobiano mare turns and burns with the best of 'em. Samantha Collier brought "Stormy" to the 2011 AjPHA Youth World Championship Show on July 1 where they competed in the Novice Youth Barrel Racing, marking a time of 16.895 to take home their first world championship. The Paint Horse Journal caught up with the 15-year-old barrel racer to ask her about her run and about Stormy.

Q: Tell me about your ride today?

Samantha: I think we had a really good ride.

Q: How did she handle the barrels?

Samantha: She did really well. On the first one, we had a little slip, but other than that we did really well.

Q: How long have you been riding her?

Samantha: Three years.

Q: What’s she like?

Samantha: She is the most amazing horse ever. She’d never seen a barrel until we pulled her out of the pasture three years ago. She was a broodmare, she has seven babies. We are hoping to bring one of her babies to show in barrels next year.

Q: It didn’t take much to make her into a great barrel horse.

Samantha: No, it didn’t. She knows her job and she loves to do it.

Q: What division do you and Story run in?

Samantha: At home, I run in seniors and I run in rodeos all over the place. In NBHA, I'm in 4D in open seniors.

Q: So Stormy is not only pretty, she’s talented?

Samantha: Yes. We have all Paints. That’s what my mom likes.

Q: Does your mom show too?

Samantha: She’s going to start doing halter with her Paint. She wants to come in the fall and do halter.

Q: What does it feel like to win your first world championship?

Samantha: Very good.

Q: Who would you like to thank?

Samantha: Kenneth McGuire and my mother for supporting me and Jyme Beth Cochrane, I take lessons with her, and just all my family and friends that have supported me.
